Biodiversity and climates

The objective of this module is to analyze the impact of climate change on biodiversity from a geological perspective. In particular, we will evaluate how climate forcing has directly or indirectly shaped the diversity of organisms over geological time. From analyses of real data sets and numerical simulations, we will discover and use tools allowing the reconstruction and comparison of biodiversity changes and of the main physico-chemical parameters during extinction events or rapid climatic changes of the Phanerozoic (glacial-interglacial cycles, hyperthermal events, Permo-Triassic extinction)

Example of comparison between climatic (oxygen isotopes) and biotic proxies (Petsios et al., 2019 Pal3) across the Permian-Triassic transition.
